Facet joints are located at each side of the vertabra posteriorly that interconnects upper and lower vertabrae. TThe joint is surrounded by a capsule filled with a small amount of synovial fluid and both surfaces of the joint have hyaline cartilage. A small amount of local anesthetic and streoid injection into the facet joint could help to retrieve pain due to cartilage damage of facet joints.
